Expandable hoses like the Pocket Hose Copper are lightweight and easy to store. Their flexible inner tube does the stretching — and benefits from a little regular care. Use this checklist to keep yours in shape.
Each time you use it
1Check the washerReplace the rubber washer in the connector if it looks flat, cracked or is missing.
2Hand-tighten the fittingAvoid tools; they can damage the washer and the copper threads.
3Open the water graduallyLet the hose expand evenly.
4Avoid sharp edgesLift the hose over rough concrete, metal edging and thorny plants.
5Drain after useTurn off the spigot, then open the nozzle so the hose empties and contracts.
6Store out of the sunUse a shaded hook or covered bin.
A few times a year
- Soak the nozzle in equal parts warm water and white vinegar to remove mineral buildup.
- Inspect the outer fabric for wear.
- Make sure the shut-off valve closes fully.
Before freezing weather
- Drain the hose completely.
- Store it indoors, loosely coiled.
Most important habit: don't leave the hose pressurized with the nozzle closed and the water on.
If you see a bulge or uneven expansion, stop using the hose and inspect it before the next use.
